true reefs need waters to be within a consistent range pre-dating 1970s. the range has shifted well above and this is why we are now getting coal bleaching over such wide (>60%) of the reef.
but there are corals they've recently discovered growing at the bottom of the trench off the Qld coast. > 1 km deep.
