My understanding is that shorts sellers can only make money if someone outside the cartel is "prepared" to sell, or the company is driven to the wall by triggering debt covenants etc.
Unfortunately, with margin calls, stop losses and the spreading of fear and disinformation, many end up becoming "prepared' to sell quality companies for cents in the dollar or even less.
Easy to say I know, but never become a forced seller.
