Valid question which I remember asking when I first joined the forums.
Bots are essentially if you like ro'bots' programmed for trading a share. I believe the proper term is Algorithmic Trading. Here's a wiki link. Also there is a forum on this site devoted to it - see your forums list.

There is a lot of divided opinion on them especially as they appear to give an advantage to the select few that are allowed to use them. Normally pretty easy to see when Bots are active. You'll see trades of as low as 1 or 2 shares or or consistently similar number of shares traded.

There are plenty of people with strong knowledge on these things on the forums. I'm not one of them. :)
