Driving an older car and putting the funds into the ground via drilling is also an enduring trait of those who have done well in resources. My wife drives a newer one say 5y/o but mine is 13?*.
For me it's not about the gadgets although you have a point. I suspect we will be able to buy them new ones around AUD$12,000 to $15,000 (in current $) within 5 years. That's if self-driving cars aren't coming in and self-driving ones on order like Uber (using Waymo type tech) haven't made personal ones all but redundant.
The key is we're investors to make money from the electrics and computers that underlie all of that.
