You have to drop down to a smaller timeframe for the inverse correlation to be apparent. Its does cross over now and then to go the other way, which would on a larger time frame give the impression of tracking oil. Gold and DXY are inverse as well, but alo correlate at times when least expected.
In a deflationary market, ie a crash, I believe gold is sold off wildly as it is frequently used as collateral. Then when the selling stops, its resumes its cycle.
