when working in the prison system here in NSW I met several Lebanese men who had been drafted by different militias. one was 12 when he was 'drafted' and taken from his family. he was trained to shoot and given heroin (oral) so that, as he said, they wouldn't feel fear of pain if shot and would simply keep fighting on. he was a Druze christian.

as for Egypt, it seems, from the news I read/hear, that Egypt is working with Israel to keep the border shut tight. but its Israel who controls the Rafah gate from inside. I learned last night (BBC) that Egypt currently has over 100,000 Gazans awaiting a flight out to a visa-granted country.
