I read your argument and take your point on board.... yep, the annual cost averaged out isn't massive compared to essential services like NDIS. but the couple of subs aren't an essential service. and drones are also being developed, refined and manufactured by China and other countries including Aus at a rapid rate.

170 drones were a mix of missiles, rockets and drones according to sources I read. I suspected that the small number were deployed in order to give Israel a firm warning, not to break the Iron Dome defences. should Iran let off another volley they've warned of 20,000 missiles and drones. they have plenty.

but this is in the attack mode. drones for Aus would be more for defence. and a swarm of drones can cover a much larger area of sea and land than even the ultimate sub can manage. much cheaper, disposable and enabling a vast array of weaponry to be used. much easier for Aus to match the numbers of Chinese, for example, drones should they attack.

the nuke subs are aggressive weapons, too few in number, too limited in function and too expensive by far.

only imo and I know too little.... all I have is news and imagination.
