"History has shown lesser powers that survived and fared most well through conflicts between major powers are those that didn't take sides and stayed their own course."

Potentially before nuclear weapons this may have had merit. Conflicts between major powers won't happen now, not directly. All that's left for them is to play around in the sand pit and coerce unaligned, smaller countries that hold no real deterrent. The US & Russia have been doing this for decades, now China is getting in on the act.

ASEAN countries can do as they please. What they think is right for them isn't necessarily going to be right for Australia, which is demographically, geographically, culturally & historically, not Asian. To me, the movements in the SCS show China is already putting the pressure on those countries. As the Chinese push out more subs, aircraft carriers etc, IMO those pressures are only going to intensify.

    Cheers!
