Many patients with long term renal failure have home dialysis -which is no bag of laughs. They follow a protocol which could be adjusted depending on K results rather than sending off for a traditional lab test which may not come back for a day or 2-plus the bother of getting the sample to the lab. Even in a hospital setting of a dialysis unit, to have an immediate result would be great to be able to say to a patient "you've had enough now" or" you need some more" because adequate dialysis depends on the current state of the patient and varies among patient. The question that remains unanswered is whether the K level is an accurate proxy for the effectiveness of the dialysis session. Even when the tech is sorted, clinical trials may take some time.
