I think ukraine’s support of Hitler was more complicated than you imply. At the time Ukraine was bitterly smarting over the death of millions of Ukrainians in what became known as the holodomor. This was the direct result of two factors - ongoing resentment from Ukrainians towards the Soviet Union and Stalin’s appalling and short sighted agricultural policies (which by the way have left their mark on the Aral Sea). Further, Ukrainians weren’t very friendly towards Jews. However that had far less impact than the former in supporting Germany. Ukrainians initially saw the Germans as potential liberators from oppression. What they got instead was a different type of oppression from a different master. that Ukraine has a long history of nationalism is well documented and it has long been the source of annoyance to Russia and Putin has resurrected what once looked to have been put aside and Ukraine has gone back to its deep roots - a determination to exist as an independent entity

Yep, that is why Putin does not want the entire country, just the parts where the majority identify as Russian. Everyone in the Soviet Union sphere suffered under Stalin and co.
