afghanistan was the soviet union's part of the world .. and had very good reasons to be involved ... surprise surprise but many muslims in the soviet union in that part of the world .. and surprise surprise, they were not too happy about fundamental Islamists gaining a foothold .. the soviets went in to support a secular government ..

obviously the brave afghani people, fighters for democracy/freedom were supported by the americans (via the cia) .. prez reagan even dedicated a space mission to these brave mujhadeen ..
