Well, I would point out that in a new initiative two years ago, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services and BARDA partnered with two major US tissue banks to create and maintain an inventory of human cadaver skin allograft that would be available in the event of a mass casualty emergency involving burns from chemicals, nuclear or radiological incidents or bombs.
It is for this same purpose that BARDA has been funding clinical development of Novosorb BTM as a dermal matrix for use in the treatment of severe burns and is likely to stockpile BTM if and when it is approved by the FDA under the PMA pathway.
The contracts with CTS and AlloSource were awarded using approximately US$38 million in BARDA Project BioShield designated funding.
CTS's allograft skin is stored at negative 80 degrees Celsius after it's been processed, and it can be stored for up to five years. The company distributes ~ 40,000 skin allografts for burns annually.
