I don't think that's cynical. It's realistic. They may have been hoping the exit happened 3 months ago, but there were no entries/exits from the ASX 200 and MSCI small caps index last quarter. I'd probably do the same if I had the financial resources. The root cause of the problem is large funds lending out their stocks for shorting in the first place. Sure they can earn additional fees, but I'm sure most people invested in the funds for their retirements savings would be against the idea (if they knew about it). And in the meantime, aussie companies producing actual wealth/economic output are severely impacted. Luckily, we didn't need to raise capital in the past few months.
