The index funds hold huge numbers of shares right across the board. They can make alot of money leveraging that power.
if the govt/asic etc wrote a new rule that said index funds are not allowed to lend their shares, it would change the landscape for shorters in a big way.
Instead of just outright banning it like some countries have done, it would just slow it down, alot.
this sort of shorting is anti-competitive.
I think its ok for commodity trading but not companies.
Companies share price should fall if shareholders are selling out after losing faith, not because of this sort of manipulation.
Very destabilising.
