A sewage treatment plant in Handan, Hebei Province recently successfully completed an upgrading project, with the effluent quality being raised from the original ClassAdischarge standard to the more stringent Class IV surface water standard.

The wastewater treatment plant currently has a daily treatment capacity of25,000tons andcan be expanded to50,000tons in the future. A key part of the transformation is the introduction of membrane aerated biofilm reactor(MABR)technology, an innovative solution that plays an important role in meeting the more stringent requirements for ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen removal.

In order to meet the stricter requirements for the removal of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen, the project added an anoxic tank in front of the original Biolake process and introducedthe MABRprocess to improve the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen. In addition, the expansion of the biochemical pool and the upgrade of the sludge system also further optimized the treatment process to ensure that the effluent water quality meets higher environmental protection standards.
