Thorium is used for breeder and travelling wave reactors. There are other names but they are just variants of theses. There is another fuel for these it is called Depleted uranium. It is wat is left over from making bomb and reactor fuel. The US alone has enough of this to supply all the worlds electric for 200 years. Tera power is building a large power plant in Wyoming at the site of an old coal plant. Since this depleted Uf6 has been processed for bombs and regular reactors. Only small amounts of processing is needed. The USG is spending a lot every day to store this. I doubt Thorium can compete with this fuel source. The travelling wave is a fuel once run for 50 years and seal up no transport of products from the reactor. There are other designs that are refueled. Travelling wave does use a small uranium reaction to start it. Its biggest advantage is it slows down as it gets hotter. material expansion decreases critical mass. To get more power you have to cool it. Self regulating. Exact opposite of PW reactors.
