It’s certain (not just possible) that there’ll be a change of government in Queensland next month — there’s no way that the current incompetent lot will be re-elected again after nearly 10 years of appalling government. But you’re right, I think, that an LNP government may not change the current extortionate royalties regime, at least in its first term. Labor has left the State budget in an unholy mess, and it’s difficult to see what alternative revenue source would be tapped if the current royalties regime were to be scrapped (or more realistically, moderated).

Governments (of all persuasions) become quickly addicted to the sugar hits of royalties, etc, with the result that they’re very difficult to change. That said, the mining companies and business lobbies should be pressing Crisafulli hard to commit to review and reform of the current royalties regime.
