It wasn't about defeating Putin. It was about weakening Russia both economically and politically so that a discontent revolution from within. Financial weaponising USD and wealth confiscation was the US option that was good on paper. Consequences cannot be calculated in practise unless it was the ideology of hubris and exceptionalism.
