the problem with philosophers and poets etc etc throughout history is that -whilst philosophical study is enormously valuable and can be applied through any time period

that is only true of some things - not all things

like the US constitution and it's right to bear arms thingy ----- well, bugger me, if they (constitutional authors from the past) could have peered forward and see what an AR15 looks like and what Hollywood would do to create a culture of guns like it has and see the amount of mass shootings and school shootings

would they have still written the constitution in the way they did?????

if they did, then, they would have had to be a particular and special kind of stupid.

SAME deal with issues of publication, press, speech etc etc

if we went back to the days of the great philosophers and showed them down the track tools like X and facebook etc etc -

would they have been all gung ho about 'freedom of speech' etc etc.?

    I think, most likely not

Indeed, if they could have been teleported forward a few thousand years and lobbed into a trump rally or Liberal HQ in Australia -------- and been allowed to listen for an hour or so

I think they would have had serious doubts about 'democracy' and they sure as hell would have probably thought - compulsory voting - as a very very bad idea.

times change, technology brings out the best AND the worst in society
