Hiya guys,
The CSIRO holds patented techniques in analysing fluid history which they received a medal for in 2004.
I've extracted a brief outline of the 3 tests being QGF, QGF-E and GOI but it's worth opening both links, they are only 1 page each.
Introduction
Quantitative Grain Fluorescence (QGF) and Quantitative Grain Fluorescence on Extract Fluorescence (QGF-E) are techniques for detecting current and palaeo-oil zones by measuring the intensity of fluorescence from ultraviolet light-excited hydrocarbons sealed in fluid inclusions and at the surface of siliciclastic rocks.

The Grains with Oil Inclusions (GOI?) technique is used for oil exploration to detect oil migration and accumulation and particularly to constrain the stepwise fill history of reservoirs.
GOI? analysis can be used to quantify the significance of oil shows by establishing the maximum oil saturation and map the original oil water contact for prediction of up-dip oil or missed oil.
The technique is also used quantify the height of the original oil column in present day gas reservoirs to predict the down-dip oil leg or the volume of displaced oil.
The GOI? results can also be used to define the oil charge potential relative to key exploration parameters to predict regional charge therefore maximising the value of previous drilling.

The following is an extract from the last Surprise announcement.
"The core recovered is still undergoing detailed analyses and will be sent to Weatherford laboratories in Brisbane to test for permeability, petrology, oil typing and saturation and other properties"
Hopefully, these people are onto it and can came up with the goods. It is certainly not helpful to not have a core from JW1 to compare.
Here also is the link to the overview of how the CSIRO tests can be applied for instance in combination with Seismic to predict the location of oil and gas deposits.
