11 PPG = 1.32 gm/cc
Density of water = 1 gm/cc
Density of gas = ~0.72 gm/cc (thats why its always gas, oil, H2O)
So as gas comes to the surface frm ~2900m it expands as a massive gas bubble & the wellhead pressure increases as does the mud in the tanks. In short the alarms start ringing. So the idea is to detect it early & kill the well with heavy mud. Hence the 11 PPG. Hope that clears the situation.
More imp. this is above their target, so not a concern for the deeper section. Glad they pressure tested the BOP's etc on Friday, so the well is secure.
