You are correct that they are making sure the gas kick is controlled and the resulting reason for the kick resolved. This does not mean we have a gas find. The best thing at this point is the hole is secure with drilling started. No Poseidoon 1 here please.

They may want to take a core sample at the top of the target reservoir to ckeck for the presence of conditions condusive to oil, gas, and water. This will give the driller a picture of what reservoir stress conditions to expect later. Best have an idea of the requirements before punching a hole and not being ready.
