Difference between BB and R of C

Would someone pls explain the difference between AMP persistent buyback and Suncorp proposed Return of Capital
The argument by supporters of buybacks is that it will result in the reduction of the number of shares on issue but Suncorp Return of Capital will also achieve a reduction of the number of shares on issue.

Both companies have sold a section of their businesses off…both are in the financial industry, so comparison is valid.

In AMP case, my opinion about the spruiking by the board about ‘best practices” and aligning themselves with shareholders is meaningless chatter!

It really means we are trying to keep the Institutions and large shareholders happy by giving them ample time to offload shares to reduce their tax obligation. From my bit of tax knowledge is if AMP had chosen to distribute the excess fund as return of capital it would have meant that these Institutions would getting an income resulting in them having to pay a higher tax rate.

What Suncorp has done in the past and now with the upcoming R of C it will amount too, that every shareholders will get a portion of the excess funds and the company will still achieve AMP aims in reducing the number of.shares on issue.

To most of the retail shareholders it will tax free but will result a reduction in the numbers of shares held.

In another thread I pointed out that in the past AMP used payout dividends and R of C….it was possible to get 2 dividends and also distribution of R of C within a financial year.

Just image the extra financial assistance to cost of living pressure by gaining an extra form of payment or higher dividend.

Now which company do u think is the better corporate citizen?

Does this article hint that board members should have taken into consideration the economic climate that the community is facing
