I think you just have to treat them on a case by case basis and watch for signs of significant distribution. Doesn't matter how much someone shorts a stock, if the FA is there the funds/instos will just run the shorts over ... of course if you're dumb like me then you know that you really never know the FA with any certainty and you're wrong plenty of times which is why I look for signs of a stock topping on the chart as they are much more reliable than my FA view

btw I wasn't criticising you for selling, it's just good risk management to take some off the table when you have big profits, I'm sure you saw my posts saying I've sold some, the pain of giving it all back reached the point where it was greater than the pain of missing out on some of the future upside. As Minervini says, when you sell partials you put yourself in a win/win psychological position, if it fails at least you sold some, if it keeps going at least you didn't sell it all
