It is not as much about how many shorts there are, it is about their timing and how they are utilised to play on the vulnerable part of the market who are always a step behind. With precise timing they can clamp down on any potential break out or bullish movement before they are allowed to get into the groove. Unfortunately, these algorithms are allowed, and these institutions can operate as they wish. If the ASX ever changed the rules and allowed a fair, level playing field it would be a completely different story but sadly they will likely never do that unless there is intense public pressure from retail! The pressure will never come from institutional investors - as if institutions are ever going to agree to structural changes and rules when they are making bank and have a head start and can dictate the market as they please.
What this company needs is jaw dropping/amazing discovery type news to knock them all out of the park and start a genuine re rate. Either that or a complete shift of liquidity to accept risk again. Looks like this may be closer than we think. Once the major goldies hit their rhythm, this will flow down to developers, and then explorers.
