It seems nickel is still the metal of choice for high capacity batteries. LG, CATL, Tesla are all working to develop single crystal high nickel (> 80%) cathodes.
The LG Blog earlier this year:
"In short, Single-Crystal High-Nickel qCathode isa next-generation battery material with improved battery capacity and lifespan, which maximizes Nickel content out of all metals that form a cathode (Proportional change: High-Nickel)."28 Feb 2024
