Rather than managing the Fridge as a machine, AI could manage the food being stored...

1. Image recognition (and consulting an online image database provided by producers) would recognize what has been loaded into the fridge and removed from the fridge (and warn you if didn't get a good enough look)
2. Strain sensors on each shelf would verify the weight of items added or removed improving its inventory estimate (for example, when you use some milk).
3. The same online database would enable the AI to worn if an item is reaching its used by date.
4. The system could suggest recipes based on what is left in the fridge.
5. It could compile a shopping list to replenish what is remaining based on its accumulated knowledge of past stocking habits, consumption rates, and the room available.
6. It can arrange ordering and delivery of that shopping suggesting a delivery time based on its knowledge of when you are likely to be home.
7. An olfactory sensor could detect the early signs of deteriorating food.
8. Based on a history of temperature within the fridge it could more precisely estimate the life span of each item.

"That kilo of mince is getting a bit long in the tooth. Recommend spaghetti bolognese, that would use-up the 1.5 kg of tomato as well."
