I've been watching that. But didn't check it today. That big spike down does indicate a squeeze. The data is lagged but the squeeze is definitely there!
That said I wouldn't be surprised if some short positions are offsetting assets held in NIC. I say this because the for 24months the shorts have largely remained above 3% despite plenty of volatility. So I'm thinking that 3% is almost the floor, the amount of 3% more accurately represents the speculative trades and those most likely to be squeezed.
