Putin/Russia once tried to join NATO prevented only by Putin's Ego. Russia will try again after Putin mainly to avoid Chinese hegemony. This war is a minor event in the greater hings to come in the technologically advanced globalised world. Russian's inherently hate Chinese and Xi knows it is the reason why none of the giant projects between them will not eventuate. Russia talk big of BRICS but its members led by China not backing any common ventures as they know Russia will be pushing to align with Europe the very day Putin is gone.
