JL Intuitively, I don't believe a reciprocating engine needs a lot of rotating mass to be used for grid stabilisation. If it is connected to the grid,
it has to running at the required revs to generate 50HZ (50 cycles/second). If you open the throttle, it will push power into the grid at 500HZ.
If you try to idle it, the generator will simply become an electric motor and take power out of the grid to keep the engine speed constant.

Now lets get down to each piston in the engine. The power it produces on each firing will simply depend on the air fuel ratio. A low fuel amount will mean that the engine will idle. the optimum air fuel ratio will mean that the engine is operating at full power. How long, in time, will it take to go from one to the other? I don't know but my guess is much less than a second. I would also guess that the power that the generators produce will not be controlled onsite but, rather, from signals sent from the grid control room. I would believe that this control is what Strike means by ancillary services - for which Strike will bet paid.
