Out of curiosity, how do you know he wasn't with ZIP when approached? Its not uncommon for people to speak with other companies about potential employment while still employed by their current company. If its based off his tenure in LinkedIn, that's not the best example.
Executive Level role discussions typically start months in advance, with a gap between when they leave their current position and join their new company.
