Cubic isMetro placed the contractor for its "smart card" fare-payment system in default Tuesday, giving it 30 days to get the long-delayed technology up and running or it will terminate the contract and seek damages.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority contracted with San Diego-based Cubic Transportation Systems in November 2002 to upgrade the fareboxes on its 1,450 buses and integrate them into a system with the Ticket Vending Machines at rail platforms and 250 retail outlets where tickets can be purchased. The goal was to offer riders a plastic card, similar to a credit card, with an embedded computer chip that could store value and debit fares by waving it atop a sensor.
