I don't believe the mining company propoganda of doom and gloom , we could have gone with the RSPT and the whole nation could have reaped the benefits with little effect to mining as a whole.
Some reduced profits for the majors they would still have been making huge profits as its profits tax.
Menzies introduced a wool tax in the 50's when that started to distort the economy. The wool growers went into overdrive crying poor. History repeats.
We now have a two speed economy that is not good for the nation as a whole , Ken Henry recognised that and recommended the RSPT along with a raft of other reforms.
But all he done was to recommend , politicians decide.
Thats why if you ask if the guy recommending change had run a business , why aren't you asking if the people deciding or the ones who want to decide have they run a business?
My opinion is running a business make you qualified to run a business in that field.
It does not make you qualified to run a government department or a country.
