Prolly the most obvious example of "subsidence" is New Orleans. Not even Al Gore used that as an example of sea-levels rising. Even he knew there were limits to gullibility. LOL
As I read it, it was simply that the dykes allowed the city foundations to dry and therefore "shrink".
