One of the reasons I bought Western Mining (WMC, WMR) 40 odd years ago was they were a large , diverse miner that knew when to open and close their various mining operations to suit the various commodity cycles. It's the only way for a big miner to operate profitably.
BHP certainly thought so, when they took over Western Mining 20 odd years ago.
