It could be short sellers seeking to avoid margin calls or a broker needing a lower closing price In the case of a customer’s sell order as an indication of the broker's ability. Because the broker’s future commission depends on the customer’s estimate of his ability, the broker, in this case, manipulates the closing price downwards by selling shares at the close. The thing to keep in mind is that these days hedge funds include shorting to increase performance. Including short-sellers as part of a fund of hedge funds (portfolio of hedge funds) or even as part of a traditional stock and bond portfolio, will increase the performance and reduce downside risk.....see link below:
