Moosey - the 50c/s issue that G was referring to is well known and to do with the fact that renewables produce DC with is then passed to an inverter which provides the 50c/s A/C. The problem is that short interruptions to the grid (e.g lightning strike, kettles going on the the grand final break etc) rely upon "inertia" in the turbines in steam driven generation in 50c/s is what "carries" the grid over these short term interruptions. This inertia is not present in a renewables grid and thus it collapses from such issues. To get around this is other countries (which have high levels of renewables they use "synchronous condensers" which are essentially electric motors driving a large flywheel and then another generator - the flywheel provides the "inertia" essential to a stable grid. This is all additional costs and loss of power (due to inefficiency in the electric motor and then re-generation. The Gencost 2024 report ignores these costs and many other. A report has just come out from Frontier Economics outlining the gross errors in Gencost 3034 - frankly just misinformation by our government and their CSIRO accolades. For more information see HERE for the frontier economics report and HERE - slides 19 to 25for Proff Stephen Wilsons presentation on synchronous condensers on a renewables grid.
