The 'genuine' gold bugs will throw in the towel when any of the following happens:

1) The western world, and especially the USA, show they are serious about fighting the debt and inflation (ie getting a volcker type figure)

2) The price of gold reaches a level that shows gold being re-monetised. At least high enough to cover 50% of M0 and probably much higher.

The first is almost impossible and the second is highly likely.
