I couldn't find the original news letter article, could you post a link? So are you an Aussie SW grower?
I see Plummer is working closely with ITC: Current projects Molecular characterization of the fungal disease defence response in tropical sandalwood (Santalum album). ARC funded project with Forest Products Commission and Integrated Tree Cropping with E Ghisalberti, E. Barbour, T Burgess (Murdoch Univ) and J Bohlmann (Univ British Columbia).
Apparently ITC has some problems with the management of their plantations and the trees are suboptimal v.s TFC's and this is well known. I also understand poor irrigation techniques lead to fungal growth - this is manageable...TFC moved to drip irrigation and where flood type irigation is used - tailored leveling of the land to ensure drainage is in place. This all comes down to different approaches and having to learn from past mistakes.
Data form the 130 trees currently being sampled by TFS will also help resolve some of the uncertainty and aid validation of PDS assumption.
Awaiting sample results.
