No mention in the article of the core problem around these freelancing type websites, which is that people are incentivised to conduct their business "off site" after they've built up a following, to paying the website's 20% cut. Same issue faced by Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer.com etc.
Let's say I need someone to mow my lawn. I find someone to do it on Airtasker. I pay them $100, they do a good job, everyone's happy. Because they did a good job, I'll seek the same person out the next time. The freelancer knows this, and they offer to do the same job for $90 - I just need to contact him directly instead of through the website. This way, he gets $10 more in his pocket and I get a better rate. There is nothing the website can do to stop this.
If you're successful on a freelancing website, you grow pretty quickly to be resentful of 20% of your paycheck going to a website each time. The freelancer is clearly motivated to take repeat business offline.
Growth in booked tasks on the Airtasker website has been tepid the past 5 years and I suspect the above factors strongly in it. And I suspect growth will continue to be weak going into the future.
