That's their fault for not doing their DD and realising that the European markets are terrible vs the US markets. The US markets are by default what everyone means by long term hold success, and anyone investing in it have succeeded. You're just cherry picking rare fails to justify not being patient and being afraid of everything.

Nonsense. I started investing right after the 2020 crash, and have held through the highs of 2021 and the lows of 2022-23. Still holding and still accumulating. I think I'm sitting on a gain of 41% p.a. over the last 4 years, beating the SP500's 12-14% p.a. Not bad at all. The people who have actually made money via long term investments will know exactly what I'm talking about here. Learn to be "zen", and you will be rewarded, otherwise the markets will destroy you.
Also, if you have investments that went to zero, then you're a terrible stock picker. Index funds are a better choice for you.
