With the backing of global miner Xstrata, junior platinum company Nkwe is making great strides as it works to bring its Garatau platinum group metals mine in South Africa into production. The wider context is looking a lot happier too - the PGM markets have rebounded since the global financial crisis and the company is confident that demand will hold up over next two years, by which time Garatau should be in production.
The mine is situated in Bushveld, the platinum producing region of South Africa, which accounts for 80 per cent of global supply. Development is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of this year and it?s expected to take 18 months to complete. Garatau has a JORC resource of 24 million ounces of PGMs which amounts to a 60 to 70 year mine life, on production of around 300,000 to 400,000 ounces of platinum per year.
