I had the impression the colostrum antibodies would pass through the calf 's stomach wall directly into the blood for the first 12 hours after the calf was born , but it is around 30 years since I studied that so probably wrong .
I remember freezing some colostrum for any calves born prematurely late in the season , or born to 2 year old heifers that do not have as many antibodies as older cows .
Electrolyte for calves and clean wood shavings in a airy barn , seemed to be more effective than giving colostrum overall .
Cow colostrum for adult humans does seem a strange therapy , but then so is leaches for cleaning wounds, yet it seems medically proven , would really need more independent surveys to validate the practice IMHO .
