I think you are onto some of the main factors involved @OldGeo. Very cool. Thank you. The more northern restricted currents in the early formation of the nascent Atlantic Ocean were also quite likely key factors in the OAE1a giving rise to the ubiquitous and fecund Aptian source rocks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selli_Event

Here is a 110 Ma (Albian, Early Cretaceous) reconstruction of the south Atlantic, showing the reconstructed gravity from Smith and Sandwell 1995. Continental shelf edges are shown in blue. Dipping reflectors are shown as blue circles. Large igneous provinces, including volcanic margins, are shown in red. Hotspots are shown as red stars.

About seven million years earlier is when the Aptian source rock was formed. The rift would have been narrower, hence poor circulation as you've indicated, hence the Ocean Anoxic Event (OAE1a)

Here is a nice visualization of the tectonics involved from the early Jurassic to Cretaceous:

And here is Trove's take on Shell's recent announcement:
    Timing is everything, eh?!
