Don't ever lose sight of the fact huge government subsidies went into the building of the rail line and it's built on leased government land.

If it was entirely their money and they owned the land I would agree with you. However that is not the case and the way the rail networks are now from a nationalistic perspective they are inefficient. Spend half an hour looking at the map of the Pilberra and you will see what I mean.

Just to use a silly argument, if the tonnage was increased by a factor of say 10 in a war like situation they would be forced into making it work. The obvious answer is as many continuous loops as possible and no siding passing situations. Single one way track is inefficient.

Yes, the court system is slow but it is a system and it's our system and in the long run it works. I would hate to be a barrister defending single one way track against an opposing barrister who argues my client is prepared to pay to turn two single one way tracks into a continuous loop. That is an argument that will see the light of day, one day. For the four Judges on the High Court it would be a no brainer.
