Yes possibly the Aussie Govt could have tried to take some action, however I think it likely that the advise given would have been ...'there's nothing we can do because of the internal situation in that country'.

I think Aussie military would rescue hostages, if required, that were held in Mali. But unfortunately a tangible asset such as a gold mine ...with wagner/Russian troops etc around, would be out of scope IMO.
