Based on some realistic assumptions, the South Star line has the potential to yield no more than 20,000 t vein quartz to a depth of 50 m. The assumptions are: average width 20 cm, total length 800 m, specific gravity 2.7, 20% of tonnage has been mined already.
Based on the spacing and, apparent size of the old workings, no more than 20% of this tonnage could be expected to have anything like ore grades. The tonnage potential is therefore around 4,000 - 5,000 t quartz. With such tonnages, values of 100-200 g/t gold would be required to made a viable mining operation. An important factor would also be the amount of dilution of quartz by country rocks during stoping.
