I doubt that it was used as a proof of concept to move to 'bigger' things. I think that the plan for what they wanted to achieve with the DW wasn't executed well and the progress got to a certain point and stalled.
That being said, the Airplus partnership will likely enable them to achieve what they intended with the DW, but using less manpower and no balance sheet risk. I suspect if they had the Airplus partnership in the works at the time they would never have acquired Invigo.
