    You got half the story.

Going forward fuel excise and fuel guzzler rego fees have to increase
to maintain transport infrastructure at a time when EVs are gathering
    market traction (fuel use declining)

But IMO the biggest hit to ICE owners going forward will be the depreciation
of their ICE vehicles . That is happening already in Europe and some Governments
have offered up to 3K Euros scrappage bonus where the fuel guzzlers are replaced
by fuel misers incl HEVs , PHEVs and BEVs.

Apart from reducing CO2 emissions Governments are interested in reducing
their petroleum import bills. For example Aus imports about $48 billion of Petroleum
P/A..Woundn't it be nice if that huge sum was used on stuff to benefit the health
and wellbeing of all Aussie rather than pumped out the exhausts of ICE vehicles.

I was in a swish electric train at Central today. In my few minutes there,
there were 5 other trains..Just imagine if they had been diesel locos?
This, in a way, is a microcosm of our city!
