Put your users first!
....user experience has to be of paramount importance. No one is going to keep coming back or referring you if the user experience sucks - stands to reason.
I have opted to put the user at the core of our thinking and development - we conduct surveys to generate feedback from our users and validate our thinking. We are also embarking on an ambitious site upgrade at nearmap.com with the sole aim of enhancing the user experience. We have to strike a balance between generating revenue but creating a user experience that will serve as a solid platform for future expansion and keep users and customers coming back for more.
As a CEO you try to make informed decisions and get feedback wherever possible as setting the strategy and direction of the business is my responsibility and one I enjoy. It's not easy nor should it be but it's always reassuring to know your ideas and strategies resonate and are shared by others.
